Dr. Brian Dougherty, Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Detroit, announced that Sister Geraldine Kaczynski, FSSJ, Principal of St. Sebastian Catholic School, has been named Principal of the Year for the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Sister Geraldine Kaczynski is a Franciscan Sister of St. Joseph from Hamburg, New York. Sister has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology degree from D'Youville College in Buffalo, New York and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from Marygrove College, Detroit. Sister was a teacher at St. Joseph at Elementary School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and a teacher at St. Sebastian Catholic School before becoming the principal there.

Sister has had a distinguished career in Catholic education. Sister received the National Catholic Educational Association and Grolier Educational Services, Principal of the Month in 1982, and National Principal of the Year, 1983, from NCEA and Grolier Educational Services. In 2014, Sister also received an award from the Archdiocese of Detroit for 40 years of service to Catholic education. Sister was nominated for the National Catholic Educational Association Distinguished Principal Award in 2015. Also in 2015, Sister received the Order of St. Bede Award from the Bishop Michael J. Gallagher Society for dedicated leadership and service to Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit in excess of three decades.

Sister Geraldine fosters the spiritual development of the faculty and students while building a Christian community within the school. Sister encourages student accountability for their own learning and challenges them to achieve their best. St. Sebastian graduates are known for having a strong work ethic and many are hired by area businesses as they balance high school programs, work and athletics.

The warm and friendly family environment for which St. Sebastian Catholic School is noted is directly attributable to Sister’s kind, compassionate and joyful manner in dealing with students and parents.

Besides Sister Geraldine’s commitment and dedication to Catholic education, Sister also serves the parish as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister and is also a delegate to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph Community Sister Geraldine will receive her award at the annual Catholic Schools Awards Dinner on June 45, 2017.

In addition, Sister is being recognized by the Franciscan Federation at an awards dinner on June 18, 2017 in Buffalo, New York. The award is given to a Franciscan who embodies the best of the Franciscan teaching tradition and who in their ministry, embodies the values of being personal, transformative, communal, engaging the heart and developing servant-leaders.
