Midwest Talent Search Pays Off for St. Sebastian Student

St. Sebastian Catholic School in Dearborn Heights, is one of the few schools in the area that participates in the Northwestern University’s Midwest Academic Talent Search. Students as early as Third Grade qualify for this program by scoring in the 90th percentile or above on a national assessment test – Iowa Assessments for St. Sebastian Catholic School. Students who qualify in grades 3-6 take the PSAT test with high school juniors. Students who qualify in grades 7-9 take the SAT test with high school seniors. These “out of grade level” tests allow parents and schools to identify academically talented students. There are opportunities for on-line courses or summer programs at various universities.

Kyra Mosier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Mosier of Dearborn Heights, is a 7th grade student at St. Sebastian Catholic School. Kyra has qualified for the Midwest Talent Search (NUMATS) since third grade. For the 2017-2018 school year, Kyra was invited by the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana to take an on-line enrichment course in leadership. She is completing that course in the next few weeks and has now been offered a scholarship to a Robotics and Engineering Camp at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. This camp introduces gifted and talented science and engineering oriented young men and women to the opportunities of a high technology world. Students will participate with industrial robots, computer programming/animation, mobile robots, automation, GPS, electronics and Web page development. Lake Superior State University houses one of the most modern technological educational facilities and one of the best multi-million dollar robotics labs in the United States.

St. Sebastian Catholic School is establishing an after school First Lego League team in the fall. Kyra is looking forward to participating in this competition.

St. Sebastian Catholic School Designated as Wildlife Habitat

St. Sebastian Catholic School has been designated by the National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat. The school grounds are blessed with many trees, shrubs and ground covers that act as nesting places for birds and rabbits and squirrels. Bird feeders are hung in front of the school and a birdbath is used as a source of water. Each year, a mother duck nests under the shrubs in one of the berms. Students watch to see when the young ducks are hatched and are sad to see them go down the street to the Ecorse Creek. This year, a family of rabbits has found a home in front of the school. As soon as the flowers bloom, butterflies and hummingbirds will be seen hovering about.

The Third Graders have taken charge of keeping the bird feeder and birdbath filled since they are just outside of their classroom.

Third Graders fill bird bath in front of school.
